Build date: M08--August 8, 1968
Block casting # 3935439

The overall appearance of this 1968 Polar White with Standard Black Vinyl interior 427ci/390hp 4-Speed coupe is good. The car presents as a "solid driver." This is a highly original 1968 big block Corvette with a few replacement parts. This is a car which could easily be returned to stock configuration.

The car's exterior paint presents very well. The car has been tastefully pin striped. The chrome on the bumpers, door handles, and around the windows is in good condition. The front windshield is a replacement, while the rest of the glass is original, correctly date coded for the car, and in good condition. The car stands nicely, with all the body panels lining up properly. The gaps around the doors are typical of factory production. The gaps between head light doors and the front wrap around, hood and fenders and cowl, and doors and fenders are typical. The fiberglass body panels appear original to the car, with the original bonding strips in place.

The interior appears to be original, with a few non-original items. The dash and door panels are in pretty good condition as are the seats, with the exception of a significant tear in back section of the driver's seat. The carpeting appears original and somewhat worn. The seat backs are in good condition. The steering wheel is a non original after market wheel. The shifter is a non original Hurst shifter. The owner has the original shifter. The radio is not original to the car; but, an aftermarket system. It should be noted there was no alteration to the center bezel, in which the original radio would be placed; so, a period correct radio could be easily installed. There are two after market speakers in the rear storage area, which could be easily removed.

The engine block casting # 3935439 is correct for an August 1968 built 427/390 hp Corvette. Regrettably, the engine stamp pad has been scuffed making the engine assembly date, suffix code, and serial number derivative illegible. The intake manifold # 3937793 is correct for a 1968 390hp engine. The transmission is a 4-Speed manual which appears to be original to the car. It has a date code of P8K16 E, which translates as Muncie built July 16, 1968 and the correct vin. derivative stamped vertically on the passenger's side the transmission case just ahead of the extension.

The rear axle has a code of FA 72068, which translates as 3.70:1 ratio, with posi traction, built July 20, 1968. The starter is a Delco-Remy, which may also be original to the car. The car has a service replacement alternator and after market valve covers, air cleaner, distributor cap, ignition wires, and coil.

The undercarriage of the car appears original, un-restored, in good condition and appropriate for an un-restored 43 year old chassis. The frame is solid showing no sign of damage or rust. The bell housing cover is a non-original cover used for drag racing; however, the owner has the original bell housing cover. Suspension bushings, front and rear springs and the brake pistons were replaced in March of 2004.The shock absorbers are after market shocks. The overall condition of the chassis indicates the car has spent much of its life garaged.

An operations test showed all of the car's components to function as intended. The headlight doors operate properly, the fiber optics work and the gages are fully operational. The car accelerates nicely, holds the road well and stops properly. The car is "turn key" needing nothing to be driven and enjoyed in its current state.
